Photovoltaics: The Science Behind the Solar Panel and Solar Energy? |

The word photovoltaic comes from the combination of "photo" meaning light, and voltaic meaning electricity produced by a chemical reaction. The word has been defined as the generation of sun light to produce electricity through semi-conduction with materials. Electrons are emitted from the sun to the earth. When these electrons are set free by the semi-conduction with a material such as silicon or selenium. The energy is in the electons are then released in electric DC form. |

The early years of photovoltaics and birth of solar energy.
- 1839: Photovoltaics was first discovered by a 19 year old experimenting physicist from France, Edmund Becquerel. Since his work was strictly experimental and only breached upon the photovoltaic effect, a number of scientists followed with more advanced studies. It was in the next twenty years that selenium was used as a semi-conductor experimentally.(U.S. Department of Energy, 2004 )
- 1918: The second major step in the science of advancement of photovoltaic technology was the development of single crystal silicon growth by a polish scientist, Jan Czochralski(Wikipedia, 2004).
- 1923: Albert Einstein is awarded the Noble Prize for his work explaining photoelectric effect(US Dept. of Energy, 2004).
- 1954: Bell Labs reports the first discovery of 4.5% silicon

What solution fits your requirement? You are looking for the right solution for your solar needs. As in everything you must start by asking yourself what are you buying it for. Choosing your solution for a specific function Caring for your batteries Charging your batteries Battery Care Caring for your battery is ensuring that your battery is always ready for you. Did you ever leave on your car lights on all night? Ever experience the dreaded car battery deep freeze…in the mountains? Admit it—we all have. Surprise, fresh snow greets you in the morning, your skidoo beckons, but you will not be there because your battery has lost its charge. But with Sunsei’s best-of-class portable sun chargers it’s just a big laugh, a “what if?”. When you’re storing solar energy all day long, those hassles are history. Why because at Sunsei we ensure that you battery retains its power in all conditions. So that you are ready at all times. Charge ICP Solar's high output Sunsei™ solar chargers fast-charge your RV battery to give you the energy needed to run your appliances, lights, radio, TV and pumps - without disrupting the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. ICP Solar's Sunsei™ products eliminate noise and pollution and create clean and abundant power to run your appliances by keeping a charge in your batteries, on your RV, boat or even at your cabin miles from civilization. What is a portable solar system? A complete solar system consists of a solar panel, a battery and a charge controller. In some cases, a power inverter is also required.
How does a solar system work?
Composed of multiple solar cells in series or in parallel, a solar panel produces direct current (DC) power; when a solar panel is connected to a battery, this power is stored in the battery. A charge controller connected between the solar panel and the battery monitors the battery and prevents the solar panel from overcharging while assuring a complete charge. A solar system requires an inverter when the DC power needs to be converted into alternating current (AC) power to operate appliances or supply power to the utility grid. What does a charge controller do? A charge controller is recommended in most charging systems, it installs between the solar panel and the battery, and is designed to prevent the overcharging of your battery. Getting started: Sunsei panels are easy to mount and put in place. We believe that you should not need to be an engineer to put these panels to use.
